　　周公，聖人之治者也，後王不能舉，則仲尼述之，而周公之道明。仲尼，聖 人之備者也，後儒不能達，則孟軻尊之，而仲尼之道明。文中子，聖人之修者也， 孟軻之徒歟，非諸子流矣。蓋萬章、公孫醜不能極師之奧，盡錄其言，故孟氏章 句略而多闕。房、杜諸公不能臻師之美，大宣其教，故王氏“續經”抑而不振。 　　《中說》者，子之門人對問之書也，薛收、姚義集而名之。唐太宗貞觀初， 精修治具，文經武略，高出近古。若房、杜、李、魏、二溫、王、陳輩，迭為將 相，實永三百年之業，斯門人之功過半矣。貞觀二年，御史大夫杜淹，始序《中 說》及《文中子世家》，未及進用，為長孫無忌所抑，而淹尋卒。故王氏經書， 散在諸孤之家，代莫得聞焉。二十三年，太宗沒，子之門人盡矣。惟福畤兄弟， 傳授《中說》于仲父凝，始為十卷。今世所傳本，文多殘缺，誤以杜淹所撰《世 家》為《中說》之序。又福畤于仲父凝得《關子明傳》，凝因言關氏蔔筮之驗， 且記房、魏與太宗論道之美，亦非《中說》後序也。蓋同藏緗帙，卷目相亂，遂 誤為序焉。 ...
