Book cover

American Prisoners of the Revolution by Danske Dandridge is a gripping account of the hardships and struggles endured by American prisoners during the Revolutionary War. Dandridge’s meticulous research and vivid storytelling bring to life the untold stories of those who suffered in captivity, providing a fresh perspective on a lesser-known aspect of the war.

The book begins by setting the historical context, highlighting the brutal conditions of British prison ships and prisons where American soldiers were held captive. Dandridge delves into the daily lives of prisoners, exploring their struggles for survival in overcrowded, disease-ridden, and often inhumane environments. Through detailed accounts, the author depicts the squalor, malnourishment, and general despair that characterized the experiences of these men.

What sets this book apart is Dandridge's attention to detail and the breadth of her sources. By drawing from personal journals, correspondence, and official records, she provides a well-rounded perspective on the plight of American prisoners. The author successfully weaves together these individual stories to present a comprehensive narrative of their collective struggle.

One of the most captivating aspects of the book is the portrayal of resilience and strength exhibited by these prisoners. Dandridge highlights the various ways in which they resisted and attempted to maintain their morale amidst the hardships they faced. From organizing covert communication networks to creating makeshift schools and forming close-knit communities, the prisoners demonstrated their unwavering determination to survive and ultimately secure their freedom.

However, readers should be prepared for the book's unfiltered depiction of the suffering endured by these prisoners. Dandridge does not shy away from describing the deplorable conditions and the various abuses they endured at the hands of their captors. While this may be difficult to read, it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these forgotten heroes and the true cost of freedom.

Ultimately, American Prisoners of the Revolution is a must-read for anyone interested in delving deeper into the lesser-known aspects of the Revolutionary War. Danske Dandridge's impeccable research and engaging storytelling breathe life into a forgotten chapter of American history. Through her words, readers will gain a newfound appreciation for the sacrifices made by American prisoners and the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

PREFACE

The writer of this book has been interested for many years in the subject of the sufferings of the American prisoners of the Revolution. There is little that is original in the compilation. The reader will find that extensive use has been made of such narratives as that Captain Dring has left us. The accounts could have been given in the compiler's own words, but they would only, thereby, have lost in strength. The original narratives are all out of print, very scarce and hard to obtain, and the writer feels justified in reprinting them in this collection, for the sake of the general reader interested in the subject, and not able to search for himself through the mass of original material, some of which she has only discovered after months of research. Her work has mainly consisted in abridging these records, collected from so many different sources... Continue reading book >>
