Book cover

The American Union Speaker by John D. Philbrick is a captivating and invaluable resource for anyone looking to enhance their public speaking skills. Philbrick's extensive background in education, particularly as a superintendent, adds credibility to this comprehensive guide.

One of the standout features of this book is its organization. The content is divided into logical sections, making it easy for readers to navigate and find specific topics of interest. From mastering pronunciation and articulation to developing effective gestures and postures, Philbrick covers every aspect of public speaking with precision and detail.

What sets The American Union Speaker apart from other books on public speaking is its emphasis on content selection. Philbrick offers a plethora of thought-provoking and engaging speeches, covering a wide range of subjects from history and politics to science and literature. These carefully curated speeches not only serve as examples for aspiring speakers but also provide a valuable commentary on the historical and societal context in which they were originally presented.

Furthermore, Philbrick's attention to rhetorical techniques is commendable. The book not only explains various rhetorical devices but also demonstrates how to incorporate them into speeches effectively. Philbrick goes beyond just theoretical explanations, providing practical tips and exercises for readers to practice their newfound skills.

One aspect that may leave some readers wanting more is the lack of modern examples or speeches from contemporary figures. While the historical speeches serve as a testament to the enduring power of oratory, including a few contemporary speeches would have added an element of relevance and applicability to today's world.

Nevertheless, The American Union Speaker remains a remarkable resource for speakers of any level. Its extensive coverage, expert guidance, and thoughtfully selected speeches make it a valuable tool for honing public speaking skills. Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply someone striving to become a better communicator, John D. Philbrick's book offers an indispensable roadmap to mastering the art of public speaking.

In the execution of this design no pains have been spared in selecting and preparing the best pieces, both new and old.

The extracts from recent productions, numbering about one hundred, by more than fifty different authors, are now for the first time presented in a Speaker. They are for the most part the eloquent utterances of our best orators and poets, inspired by the present national crisis, and are therefore "all compact of the passing hour," breathing "the fine sweet spirit of nationality, the nationality of America." They give expression to the emotions excited, the hopes inspired, and the duties imposed by this stormy and perilous period... Continue reading book >>
