Book cover

The Angel Adjutant of "Twice Born Men" by Minnie Lindsay Rowell Carpenter offers a captivating and inspiring account of her experiences as a Salvation Army officer during the early 20th century. This autobiography provides readers with a unique glimpse into the life of a dedicated woman who dedicated her life to serving others in need.

Rowell Carpenter's writing style is engaging and heartfelt, effectively conveying her passion for her work and the people she encountered. Her vivid descriptions and personal anecdotes transport readers to the challenging and often dangerous environments where she operated. From her early days as a young Salvation Army recruit to her experiences ministering to soldiers during World War I, the author's storytelling expertise keeps readers engaged from start to finish.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this book is the author's unwavering commitment to her mission, even in the face of adversity. Rowell Carpenter's dedication to serving "twice born men," or those who have found redemption through salvation, shines through every page. Her stories of transforming lives and bringing hope to desperate individuals are truly inspiring. Whether it is advocating for the welfare of prisoners or helping former criminals reintegrate into society, the author's compassion and resilience are evident throughout her narrative.

Another strength of The Angel Adjutant lies in its historical context. Rowell Carpenter offers a unique perspective on the social, economic, and political challenges of the time. Her observations shed light on the struggles faced by the marginalized and the Salvation Army's efforts to provide relief to those in need. Additionally, her account provides valuable insights into the organization's operations and the role of its officers.

While the book predominantly focuses on the author's experiences, it also offers glimpses into her personal life. Her descriptions of her family and her own spiritual struggles add depth and dimension to the narrative, making her story more relatable and human.

However, one aspect that could be improved is the organization of the book. The narrative occasionally jumps between different periods, which can be slightly disorienting for readers. A more chronological structure might have enhanced the overall flow and coherence of the story.

In conclusion, The Angel Adjutant of "Twice Born Men" is an incredibly compelling autobiography that highlights the remarkable journey of Minnie Lindsay Rowell Carpenter as a Salvation Army officer. Her dedication, unwavering faith, and determination to bring hope to those in need make her story both uplifting and thought-provoking. Despite some minor organizational issues, the book succeeds in conveying the transformative power of compassion and salvation. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of social activism and the indomitable spirit of those who work tirelessly to alleviate human suffering.

Introductory Note

There is surely little need for me to commend this so intimate and living picture of Staff Captain Kate Lee. It speaks for itself in speaking of one whose fine character and ceaseless labour were of singular charm and amazing fruitfulness.

The Salvation Army has been happy in its Women Officers. The lessons of experience undoubtedly teach us that they are fully qualified for all the work of the ministry of Christ.

Long denied the right of public testimony as well as the opportunity to proclaim the truth of the Saviour's mission, women have in the history of our Movement fully proved that they may be as effective, as acceptable, and as successful as their brethren, both as teachers and rulers in the Kingdom of Christ on earth. The extraordinary theory that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are confined to those who have taken part in a certain ecclesiastical ceremonial, narrow and mistaken as it may be, is surely a mild and simple form of error, compared with the appalling notion that those gifts are confined to men, and are to be for ever withheld from the other half of the human family...
