Book cover

Black Beaver The Trapper by George Edward Lewis is a remarkable account of one man's adventures and his consequential impact on the historical exploration of the American West. Set against the backdrop of the early 19th century, this compelling biography captivates readers with its vivid portrayal of the life of Black Beaver, a renowned trapper and interpreter.

Lewis masterfully weaves together historical records, personal interviews, and detailed research to create a captivating narrative that delves deep into Black Beaver's life. From his birth among the Delaware Native American tribe to his eventual journey across the wilderness, readers are immersed in the rich cultural tapestry and untamed landscapes that characterized the era.

The book excels in showcasing Black Beaver's tenacity, resourcefulness, and adaptability, traits that played a significant role in his survival and success as a trapper. From his early days as a scout and interpreter for famed explorers like John C. Frémont and Kit Carson, to his vital contributions during the heyday of the fur trade, Black Beaver's story is one of resilience and determination.

What sets Black Beaver The Trapper apart is Lewis' extraordinary attention to detail. Colorful descriptions of the harsh realities of life in the wilderness, the delicate balance between tribes and settlers, and the constant flow of change in this frontier are brought to life on the page. Readers are given a front-row seat to critical historical events, such as the Sand Creek Massacre and the forced relocation of Native American tribes, allowing for a thorough understanding of Black Beaver's experiences and the complex world he navigated.

Moreover, the author does justice to Black Beaver's character development, painting a nuanced picture of a man shaped by both the wild and the civilization that encroached upon it. While his skills as a trapper and interpreter helped him forge valuable connections, there is also a poignant exploration of the internal struggles he faced as he straddled the divide between his Native American heritage and the expanding American nation.

Black Beaver The Trapper is an enthralling portrait of a remarkable man and the historical epoch in which he lived. Lewis' engaging prose and meticulous research make this biography both educational and entertaining. With its portrayal of the American West during a transformative period and its tribute to a lesser-known hero, this book is an absolute must-read for history enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted biography.

I am both sorry and glad to inform my readers that I can neither read nor write.

It would seem absurd for a blind man to study the stars, Or for a deaf man to study music; so it might seem to you absurd for a man who cannot write to write a book. But I have an excuse for writing these events. The President of Mexico; and the Governor of Alaska together with several hundreds between, equally as popular have urged me to write my history. I am sorry I cannot write this with my own fingers but I have a substitute in my old back woods chum The Kidd. Who by the way neither writes very flourishing, because he like myself has done the most of his writing with his six shooter; because you know this a more expressive way of talking and a more impressive way of writing...
