RACHEL. Mariamne!

MARIAMNE. (Metsästä vasemmalta) Tässä seison kalliolla, Rachelini.

RACHEL. Etkä näe toki mitään?

MARIAMNE. En matkustajaa tomuvalla tiellä, enkä yhtä ainoata purjetta pinnalla Tyrhenin meren.

RACHEL. Ja kaiketi on jo aurinko lähellä laskuansa?

MARIAMNE. Niin, aivan lähellä.

RACHEL. (Erikseen) Oi Canzio, mun kallis veljeni! luulenpa tänäpän sua vartovamme turhaan. Ah! elles sä tule, niin lähestyy mua uneton, tuskallinen yö, yö ijankaikkisen pitkä. Tule toki, Canzio, ja suo mun nähdä sun ihanaiset kasvos, joita silmäni ei ole katsellut kolmen kesän ja talven vaihdellessa. Tule ja lankee sille povelle, jonka nojalla monet kerrat olet levännyt vienona poikaisena! (Mariamne tulee) No, kuinka arvelet?
