Keisarien aikakautena kilpaeli Roman ympäristö komeudessa ja loistavuudessa itse pääkaupungin kanssa.

Yltympärillä pistivät näkyviin Roman patricien[1] huvilat, ylhäisten hempeyden majat, joiden ihanuutta kaikenlaiset taideniekat, kuvanveistäjästä ruoan laittajaan asti, mestari teoksillansa enensivät.

Nämät ylevät patricit, joitten useain tulot nousivat kahdeksaan, yhdeksään miljonaan saakka, olivat usein siinä ikävässä tilassa, että heidän täytyi Romaa karttaa; kyllästys, loukattu turhamielisyys, yhteisen kansan ja praetorianien kapinat, mutta enimmästi keisarien epäluulo pakoitti heitä luopumaan "maailman kaupungista" ja muuttamaan maakartanoihinsa.

Näillä tavoin eli jo useita vuosia kartanosaan Tiberin suulla vanha Mesembrius Vir, ijäkkäin senatoreista, joka Probon kuoleman jälkeen ei ollut jalkaansa Romaan astunut eikä kasvojansa senaatissa näyttänyt. Hän syytteli kuitenkin leiniä ja kaihia, jotka hänen jaloissansa ja silmissänsä hallitsivat, ja ken vaan kävi hänen luonansa, ei koskaan nähnyt häntä muuten kuin kuruli istuimellaan[2] istuvan elevantinluinen sauva kädessä ja pitkä viheriäinen varjostin silmien edessä...
