Ma chère mignonne, je reçois ta lettre de nouvel an; j'étais bien sûre que tu penserais à moi, et je t'embrasse mille fois, en te souhaitant aussi tous les biens de ce monde, les vrais: le bonheur domestique, les bons amis, et un peu d'aisance en travaillant. Je vois que, pour le moment, tu vis comme une reine, au milieu des gâteries d'une excellente et charmante famille. Je te vois courant en traîneau, emmaillotée de fourrures princières et croyant rêver. Je vois aussi M. George écarquillant les yeux devant son arbre de Noël. Je te dirai que cette fête, perdue en France, s'est conservée à la Châtre; ce qui prouve encore une fois que le Berry est la croûte aux traditions. Nini, qui est avec moi depuis mon retour de Paris, a été invitée à passer les fêtes de Noël chez Angèle, qui a un joli garçon du même âge que Nini, un George aussi, qu'elle a adopté pour son petit mari et dont elle est positivement folle. Elle a donc vu l'arbre merveilleux et elle ne tarit pas sur ce chapitre.
