De stortregen stroomde reeds den geheelen dag. Langs de goten van de Suburra golfde het water als met twee klotsende rivieren, links en rechts, snel vlietend, de nauwe, hellende, kronkelende straat over, haar groot, gebarsten plaveisel overstroomende, mede voerende allerlei afval, tot juichend pleizier der straatjongens, die naar welbehagen beenderen en graten en groente overblijfselen er uit op vischten en er elkander meê om de ooren kletsten. De straatjongens, zij hadden dien regendag geheerscht in de Suburra, om die overstrooming der goten, gescholden door hunne moeders, die hen van uit de donkere deuren der kleine winkeltjes en kroegen terug wenkten en allerlei vervloekingen der goden riepen over de hoofden harer onbetrouwbare boefjes.
