Door het lot tot den krijgsdienst geroepen, werd hij soldaat in de marine van Napoleon, en geraakte tot den graad van opperstuurman (chef de timonerie) aan boord van het oorlogschip la Ville de Bordeaux . Driemaal krijgsgevangen genomen, doorstond hij eene lange en wreede opsluiting in de Engelsche pontons te Normancross. Eindelijk door uitwisseling vrij geworden, kwam hij zich te Antwerpen vestigen, waar hij het ambt van onderhavenmeester op de groote oorlogstimmerwerf bekwam. Hij trouwde niet lang daarna met eene Vlaamsche vrouw, en uit dit huwelijk werd, den 3^{den} December 1812, Hendrik Conscience geboren. Het kind was uiterst zwak en ziekelijk: men geloofde, dat het niet zou leven.
