Minun oli rautatietä myöten meneminen etelään päin toiseen pitäjääseen ei waan kolmanteen, sillä olihan siinä eräs pitäjäs wälillä. Rautatie ei ollut wielä walmis, mutta kumminkin jo kiskoitettu, niin että sitä myöten pääsi rautatien tarpeita kuljettawat junat wapaasti kulkemaan; siinähän sitä sitten sai kyytiä joku matkustajakin, käydäksensä kotinurkkiansa edempänä. Rautatien työmiehet, heidän waimonsa ja lapsensa saiwat myös työjunassa kulkea edestakaisin.

Olinpa semmoisen junan kanssa saanut luwan tehdä tuon pienen matkustukseni. Mitään säännöllistä kulkua kun ei wielä ollut, täytyi jo waraselta mennä asemapaikalle wartomaan, milloin juna menisi sinne päin, mihin minunkin oli meneminen.

Oli Pohjolan kaunis elokuun päiwä. Aurinko paistoi täydeltä terältä tukehduttawan kuumasti ja ihmiset puhkailiwat töissään wesimärkinä palawasta. Pysäyspaikalle oli kokoontunut wäkeä kaikilta maailman suunnilta, osaksi katsomaan tuota uutta ja kummaa, osaksi koettamaan, saisiko kyytiä tuon wohwottawan, hihkailewan ja puhisewan höyryhewon pitkähäntäisessä roikassa...
