Book cover
By:

El Diablo Cojuelo by Luis Vélez de Guevara is a fascinating and humorous tale that follows the misadventures of a young student named Don Cleofás. After making a deal with the devil, Don Cleofás is able to see the hidden secrets and vices of the people around him. As he is taken on a whirlwind tour of the seedy underbelly of Madrid, the reader is treated to a series of satirical and entertaining scenes that shed light on the social and political climate of 17th-century Spain.

The novel is filled with witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and memorable characters, making it an engaging and enjoyable read. Vélez de Guevara's vivid descriptions bring the bustling city of Madrid to life, and his sharp observations on human nature still resonate today. Despite being written over 400 years ago, El Diablo Cojuelo remains surprisingly relevant and thought-provoking.

Overall, I highly recommend El Diablo Cojuelo to fans of Spanish literature, satire, and historical fiction. It is a timeless classic that is sure to entertain and enchant readers of all ages.

Book Description:
