GÖTHEN ELÄMÄ JA TEOKSET.

Johan Wolfgang Göthe syntyi Frankfurt am Main'in kaupungissa 28 p. elokuuta 1749. Hänen isänsä, keisarillinen neuvos Johan Caspar Göthe oli jäntevä, totinen mies, kodissaan täysi yksinvaltias, jonka sana oli perheen lakina. Äiti Katariina Elisabeth Textor oli aivan toista laatua: luonteva, hilpeä, sydämellinen nainen, jonka luonteessa hellä tunne, vilkas mielikuvitus ja selvä järki omituisesti yhtyivät. Nähtävästi Göthen henkinen äidinperintö oli runsaampi kuin mitä hän isältään sai periä. Itse hän lausuu: "isältäni sain muhkean muotoni ja vakavan ryhtini; äiti kullalta sain iloisuuteni ja pakinoimis haluni. Iso isäni suosi kaunottaria, ja enhän minäkään ole heille nurja".

Ensi kasvatuksensa Göthe sai kotona. Äiti osasi kehittää pojan aattelukykyä ja vilkasta mielikuvastinta kertomalla hänelle satuja ja taitavasti johtamalla häntä itseä muodostamaan satujen loppua. Isä taas toisin tavoin vartutti nuorta mieltä. Hän kertoi pojalle jonkun jutun elämästä tai historiasta ja antoi pojan sen johdosta kirjoittaa mietelmiänsä latinaksi ja saksaksi.
