Book cover

Free Trade with India: An Enquiry by Common Sense is an insightful and thought-provoking book that delves into the complex world of international trade and its impact on India. Written by an eminent author, it presents a well-researched and comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of implementing free trade policies between India and other nations.

The book opens with a succinct introduction that lays out the author's intention: to provide a dispassionate exploration of the potential benefits and disadvantages of free trade for India. Drawing on historical data, economic theory, and case studies, the author presents a persuasive argument that challenges widely accepted beliefs and preconceived notions on the topic.

One of the most striking aspects of this book is its meticulous research and use of evidence to support the author's points. The use of real-world examples and in-depth analysis allows readers to gain a clear understanding of the potential consequences of pursuing free trade policies with other nations. The author's ability to simplify complex economic concepts and present them in an accessible manner is commendable, making this book suitable for both scholars and general readers interested in the subject.

Furthermore, the author addresses various concerns regarding free trade, such as the impact on local industries, employment, and income distribution. While acknowledging the potential benefits, the book critically examines the potential drawbacks and highlights the importance of implementing appropriate safeguards and regulations to protect domestic industries and vulnerable sections of society.

Throughout the book, the author remains impartial, allowing readers to form their own opinions based on the presented evidence. The writing style is engaging, with a logical flow that guides readers through the intricate details of the subject matter. The author's ability to strike a balance between in-depth analysis and readability is admirable, making this book accessible to readers with varying levels of knowledge and expertise.

One aspect that could be improved is the book's organization. Although the content is thorough, at times, it may feel slightly disjointed, with certain arguments appearing repetitively in different sections. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall value and integrity of the book, as the author's main points remain clear and consistent.

Overall, Free Trade with India: An Enquiry by Common Sense is a compelling and insightful examination of the potential effects of free trade on India. It offers a well-rounded view of the topic, weighing the benefits against the drawbacks and emphasizing the importance of finding a balanced approach. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in international trade, economics, and the impact of globalization on developing economies.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION .

The first edition of the following view of the question of a Free Trade to India having been sold off in the space of two days, is a proof of the interest the public take in the question of a Free Trade; my aim has been to clear the subject of all extraneous matter, and present it in a plain and perspicuous manner to my readers, I have neither addressed myself to their prejudices nor their passions, but have endeavoured by a simple chain of reasoning to come at the truth, which is my single object, for being totally unconnected with Government, the East India Company, or mercantile concerns, I can have no motive for disguising it. Soon after the publication of the first edition on the 23d instant, I received the following letter, which will perhaps be more acceptable than any thing further from me by way of preface...
