»De catechisatie was uitgegaan," zooals de geijkte term luidde; »uitgevlogen" ware juister geweest, want een zwerm meisjes, kleine, groote, welgekleede, schraaltjes uitgedoste, stoven als joelende bijen wier korf werd verstoord, het huis van den dominé uit, en hortten in haar woeste vaart tegen een troep jongens aan die op hunne beurt de catechisatiekamer gingen innemen. De haast die ze hadden om de plaats binnen te dringen, waar menig hunner licht een mauvais quart d'heure te wachten stond, mogen wij tot ons leedwezen niet aan vromen ijver en weetgierigheid toeschrijven, dat zou eene psychologische en eene historische onwaarheid zijn tegelijk maar de woeste knapen hadden eene andere drijfveer. Als ze zich wat haastten, troffen ze al licht samen met enkele achterblijfstertjes en dat gaf dan aanleiding tot gestoei en pretmakerij.... ze hadden een vol uur strak en stemmig neer te zitten onder het oog van dominé, het was niet vreemd dat ze het oogenblik waarnamen, waarin deze een ommezientje naar zijne vrouw was gegaan en eene versche pijp stopte, om nog eens wat rumoer te maken! Nu! daaraan lieten zij het zich dan ook heden niet ontbreken, daar was een gedreun of er krijgertje werd gespeeld rondom de banken, ten laatste lieten zich een paar gesmoorde gillen uit meisjeskeelen hooren, waarvan het moeielijk was te beslissen of ze uit werkelijk leed dan wel uit schalke bangmakerij werden geslaakt...
