"Dit oude Europa verveelt mij!" moet Napoleon eens gezegd hebben. En velen, dat werelddeel moede, hebben het hem later nagezegd.

Napoleon uitte dat gezegde waarschijnlijk, toen hij het toppunt zijner macht bereikt had, toen hij geheel Europa aan zijne voeten zag en hem niets meer te wenschen over bleef. En zij, die even als hij Europa moede waren, zeiden het, omdat zij hopeloos, in het oude Europa niets te winnen of te verliezen hadden.

Het is een somber gezegde, dat òf uit geblaseerdheid òf uit vertwijfeling ontstaan is en er door ingegeven wordt.

Noch de geschiedenis, noch eene bedaarde overweging der bestaande verhoudingen, brengt er ons toe dit gezegde te beamen, veeleer brengen beide ons tot de overtuiging, dat ons goed Europa noch vervelend, noch, zoo als de Amerikanen het uitdrukken, zwak van ouderdom is.

Op de geheele wereld is, tot op den nieuwsten tijd, geen schouwtooneel voor hoofd en hart meer onderhoudend en ontwikkelend, dan de beschouwing van het leven en het werken der wakkere Europeesche volken; nergens vestigt men meer zijne hoop op de jeugd, op vooruitgang en op nieuwe gezichtspunten, dan in ons kleine werelddeel, dat wel reeds oud is, maar altijd zijn levenslust blijft behouden...
