Book cover

Getting Gold: A Practical Treatise for Prospectors, Miners, and Students by J.C.F. Johnson is an insightful and exhaustive guide that caters to the needs of anyone involved in the gold prospecting and mining industry.

From the onset, it becomes clear that Johnson's extensive experience and expertise in the field shines through his writing. This comprehensive manual covers every aspect related to the art of acquiring gold, making it an incredibly valuable resource for professionals and beginners alike.

One of the book's strongest attributes is its systematic approach. Johnson meticulously breaks down the entire process, providing readers with a well-structured roadmap to successful gold mining. From initial reconnaissance and analyzing the geological indicators to the various methods of extraction, he covers every step in great detail, leaving no stone unturned.

Furthermore, the author combines technical knowledge with practical tips, ensuring that the information is not only informative but also actionable. His emphasis on the importance of observation and adaptation to different environments is particularly noteworthy. Johnson's advice is grounded in real-world scenarios, making it exceptionally relevant and reliable.

Another commendable feature of the book is Johnson's attention to safety and ethical practices. The author places great emphasis on taking precautions and adhering to responsible mining practices. His focus on preserving the environment while extracting gold is a refreshing addition to a field that often neglects these critical considerations.

Additionally, the book is supplemented with numerous illustrations and diagrams, aiding comprehension and reinforcing the concepts discussed. These visual aids are deliberate and effectively support the text, enabling readers to grasp complex ideas with greater ease.

One possible drawback of this book is that some sections may feel overwhelmingly technical for beginners. While Johnson makes an effort to simplify complicated concepts, readers unfamiliar with mining terminology might find certain parts challenging to grasp at first. However, with patience and a genuine interest in the subject matter, even these sections can be navigated with relative ease.

All in all, Getting Gold by J.C.F. Johnson is an indispensable resource for anyone passionate about gold prospecting. Its practical and comprehensive approach, coupled with the author's vast knowledge, makes it an essential guide that caters to both professional miners and enthusiastic students of the craft. With this book by their side, readers are armed with the necessary tools and knowledge to embark on a successful and sustainable gold mining journey.

The London Mining Journal of September 9th, 1891, said of it: "We have seldom seen a book in which so much interesting matter combined with useful information is given in so small a space."

The gold mining industry has grown considerably since 1891, and it appeared to the writer that the present would be a propitious time to bring out a similar work, but with a considerably enlarged scope. What has been aimed at is to make "Getting Gold" a compendium, in specially concrete form, of useful information respecting the processes of winning from the soil and the after treatment of gold and gold ores, including some original practical discoveries by the author...
