Ce que j'attendais d'eux n'était point des renseignements qui peuvent se retrouver dans les livres, les journaux ou les brochures du temps; c'était l'âme d'une époque qui n'a jamais eu d'égale dans l'histoire. Il m'arriva souvent de recueillir dans ces entretiens des détails curieux, des souvenirs personnels, des impressions très profondes sur les événements auxquels ces derniers témoins d'un monde évanoui avaient plus ou moins participé. Si la mémoire leur faisait quelquefois défaut sur les dates et les circonstances accessoires, le sentiment des choses était resté intact, et c'est ce sentiment qu'il m'importait surtout de connaître.
