L'effort que la nature fit en Italie au quatorzième siècle, en y produisant presque à la fois trois grands hommes, fut d'autant plus heureux qu'ils reçurent d'elle tous trois un génie différent. Ils prirent, pour monter sur le Parnasse, trois routes si diverses, qu'ils arrivèrent au sommet sans se rencontrer ni se nuire; et l'on jouit aujourd'hui de leurs productions, sans que celles de l'un puissent ni donner l'idée de celles de l'autre, ni y être préférées ou même comparées, ni, par conséquent en tenir lieu.
