One of the most commendable aspects of the book is the author's attention to detail. Smith leaves no stone unturned as he navigates through Dartmouth College's founding and subsequent development. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, he delves into the motivations and aspirations of the institution's founders, providing readers with a deep understanding of the vision they had for Dartmouth.

Smith's writing style is engaging and accessible, making even the most complex historical events easily understandable. He effortlessly weaves together a narrative that not only highlights the important milestones in Dartmouth's history, but also incorporates fascinating anecdotes and personal accounts. PREFACE.

In the preparation of this work the writer has deemed it better to let history, as far as possible, tell its own story, regarding reliability as preferable to unity of style.

The imperfect records of all our older literary institutions, limit their written history, in large measure, to a record of the lives and labors of their teachers.

To the many friends of the college, and others, who have kindly given their aid, the writer is under large obligations.
