Book cover

A Houseful of Girls by George de Horne Vaizey is a delightful tale that takes readers back in time to the late 19th century. Set in a charming English village, the story revolves around the Fairfax family and their endearing yet mischievous group of daughters.

The author's writing style is elegant and evocative, transporting readers to a bygone era. Vaizey's attention to detail is remarkable, beautifully illustrating the grandeur of the Fairfax family's house and the quaintness of village life. From luxurious drawing rooms to picturesque gardens, the descriptions bring the settings to life, immersing readers in the story's world.

The heart of the novel lies in the characterization of the Fairfax sisters. Each girl, with her distinct personality and quirks, is vividly portrayed. From the eldest, responsible and poised, to the youngest, curious and adventurous, the dynamics between the sisters are a joy to witness. Their interactions are genuine and heartfelt, capturing the essence of sisterly love and the occasional sibling rivalries.

The plot unfolds with a perfect balance of drama, humor, and poignant moments. The challenges the Fairfax family faces, both within their own home and in the wider community, keep the story engaging. These conflicts are not only entertaining but also allow for the development of the characters. Throughout the novel, Vaizey explores themes of family, friendship, and the search for one's identity, adding depth to the narrative.

Moreover, A Houseful of Girls offers a glimpse into the social norms and customs of the time. Vaizey expertly incorporates subtle commentary on gender expectations and the limitations placed on women, serving as a gentle reminder of the era's complexities.

While the pacing is generally well-done, there are moments when the narrative loses some momentum. However, this is a minor drawback in a story that otherwise captivates readers from beginning to end.

Overall, A Houseful of Girls showcases George de Horne Vaizey's remarkable storytelling abilities. With its endearing characters, rich descriptions, and engaging plot, this novel is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or tales of familial bonds. Vaizey's ability to transport readers to a different time and place is truly commendable, making A Houseful of Girls a literary gem worthy of recognition.

CHAPTER ONE.

HALF A DOZEN DAUGHTERS.

There were six of them altogether six great big girls, and they lived in a great big house, in the middle of a long high road, one end of which loses itself in London town, while the other goes stretching away over the county of Hertford. Years ago, John Gilpin had ridden his famous race down that very road, and Christabel loved to look out of her bedroom window and imagine that she saw him flying along, with his poor bald head bared to the breeze , and the bottles swinging on either side. She had cut a picture of him out of a book and tacked it on her wall, for, as she explained to Agatha, her special sister, she felt it a duty to support "local talent," and, so far as she could discover, Gilpin was the only celebrity who had ever patronised the neighbourhood...
