Inleiding.

De naam Grotius is overbekend. Van hem kan niet gezegd worden, wat Otto Gierke van Althusius getuigde, in de eerste uitgave van zijn beroemd werk: "Der Name des Johannes Althusius ist heute so gut wie verschollen". [1]

De Hollandsche schooljongen kent Huig de Groot en zijn boekenkist; hij kent zijn vrouw, Maria van Reigersberg, die de list verzon, ter redding van haar echtgenoot, alsmede de trouwe dienstmaagd, Elsje van Houweninghe, de "derde medespeelster in het blij eindend drama van slot Loevestein."

Als geleerde kent hem de wereld.

Grotius was theologant en wijsgeer. Grotius bewoog zich op het gebied der geschiedenis en der letteren, en heeft daar lauweren behaald; Grotius was staatsman; maar de godgeleerde en philosoof, de historicus, en staatsman zou zijn roem niet overleefd hebben, zonder de Jure Belli et Pacis, het onsterfelijke werk van een van Hollands groote zonen uit de dagen van Joost van den Vondel en Hooft, Tesselschade en Roemer Visscher, van Heinsius en Josef Scaliger, van Huygens en Rembrandt.
