Il salotto era molto elegante. Nel caminetto ardevano le legna e crepitavano allegramente. Su di un piccolo tavolo era collocata una bottiglia sturata con due bicchieri riempiti di vino ed un servizio da fumo. Al tavolo sedevano due uomini, l'uno beatamente sprofondato in una gigantesca sedia a bracciuoli, che ne celava quasi tutta la persona, l'altro seduto a cavalcioni di una sedia di cuoio, colle braccia incrociate sul davanzale.

Quei due uomini erano del tutto dissimili tra di loro, come diverso era il modo, nel quale stavano seduti.

Il primo era un uomo di mezza età, alto, slanciato, magro, con un volto molto espressivo, sbarbato e ad eccezione di un paia di piccolissimi mustacchi neri, che aveva tollerato sul labbro superiore. Qualche raro filo d'argento tra quelli. L'occhio grigio era freddo; come una di quelle antiche lame di Damasco, così grigie, così fredde, eppure così taglienti, che formano la delizia dei collezionisti e ti fendono i macigni...
