Book cover
By: (1868-1936)

White Man's Burden is a thought-provoking novel that explores themes of imperialism, racism, and the responsibilities of the colonizer. Written by Rudyard Kipling, the story follows the journey of a British man who becomes the ruler of a colony in India.

The book forces readers to confront uncomfortable truths about the impact of colonialism on indigenous populations and the sense of duty felt by those in power. Kipling's writing is powerful and evocative, and he does not shy away from addressing the complexities and contradictions of the colonial project.

While the novel may be unsettling for some readers due to its portrayal of race and power dynamics, it is an important work that sheds light on the lasting effects of imperialism. Overall, White Man's Burden is a compelling read that challenges readers to think critically about the legacy of colonialism and their own role in addressing its consequences.

Book Description:
Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius that I have ever known." In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, both of which he declined. - Summary by Wikipedia
