Harmaana, raskaannäköisesti pulppuilevana patsaana nousi kesäillan tyyneen korkeuteen savu Erkkilän karjatarhaan tehdystä suitsusta. Talon lehmät siinä hyvässä sovussa kiertelivät suitsua, mutta Marian lehmää, joka oli muualta ostettu, vihasivat kaikki eikä se uskaltanut tulla lähellekään, vaan täytyi värjötellä ulompana. Toisista lehmistä eronneet hyönteiset keräytyivät hänen ympärilleen, niin että yhtenä pilvenä pörisi ja surisi paarmat, tuppipaarmat, tökkijäiset, kärpäset ja monenmoiset hyönteiset. Eikä ne vähääkään hälvenneet, vaikka lehmä hoikalla hännällään myötäänsä huiski, kopisteli jalkojaan maahan ja puisteli päätään niin että suuret korvat löpisivät kasvopäihin.

Mutta Maria tuli nyt tarhaan, aholta kerättyjä kannonpalasia kainalossa ja kuiva tuohikäppyrä kädessä. Lehmä kun arvasi Marian nyt olevan suitsuntekohommissa, niin se ystävällisesti myristen lähti juoksemaan Marian luokse.

Maria, nähtyään lehmänsä pilvenä häärivän hyönteisparven hätyyttämänä, ryöpsähti maahan polvilleen ja edessään olevan pienen kannon juureen teki tuomistaan kannon palasista ja tuohikäppyrästä tulen ja kattoi sen maasta kynsimillään sammalilla ja turpeilla, joten se rupesi tupruttamaan sakeaa, harmaata savua...
