Miser

Book cover
By: (1622-1673)

Miser is a classic comedy written by Molière that tackles the theme of greed and its consequences. The play follows the character of Harpagon, a wealthy old man who values his money above all else. Harpagon’s miserly ways drive away his children and servants, leading to a series of comical events as they try to manipulate him for their own gain.

Molière’s sharp wit and clever dialogue are on full display in Miser, creating a hilarious and thought-provoking satire of avarice. The character of Harpagon is both ridiculous and pitiable, making the audience simultaneously laugh at his absurd behavior and feel sympathy for his sad loneliness.

Overall, Miser is a well-crafted play that remains relevant to this day as it examines the destructive power of greed. Molière’s keen observations of human nature make this comedy a timeless and entertaining read.

Book Description:
The Miser is a comedy of manners about a rich moneylender named Harpagon. His feisty children long to escape from his penny-pinching household and marry their respective lovers. Although the 17th-century French upper classes presumably objected to the play's message, it is less savage and somewhat less realistic than Molière's earlier play, Tartuffe, which attracted a storm of criticism on its first performance.
