Quel jour du mois et de l'année? Le 13 Novembre 1835. Quelle heure? Dix heures du soir sonnant à la grande horloge de St. Paul.

En même temps toutes les églises de la ville ouvrent leurs gosiers de bronze et forcent leurs voix. Quelques unes ont inconsidérément commencé de chanter avant la Cathédrale; d'autres n'y vont pas si vite et sont en retard de quatre, de six coups sur la grosse cloche. Cependant toutes se suivent d'assez près pour laisser ensemble dans l'air une même résonance longue et plaintive. On dirait que le père ailé qui dévore ses enfants décrit une courbe retentissante, avec sa faux gigantesque, au dessus de la Cité.
