Encontrábame triste, abatido, cansado de la vida: el destino me había tratado con dureza, arrebatándome seres queridos, frustrando mis proyectos, aniquilando mis esperanzas: hombres á quienes llamaba yo amigos, se habían vuelto contra mi, al verme luchar con la desgracia: toda la humanidad, con el combate de sus intereses y sus pasiones desencadenadas, me causaba horror.
