Nelle belle sere dell'autunno passato una grande stella rossa fu veduta per più mesi brillare sull'orizzonte meridionale del cielo; era il pianeta Marte, che si accostava per qualche tempo alla Terra in una delle sue apparizioni, solite a ripetersi ad intervalli di 780 giorni. Nella schiera degli otto pianeti principali Marte occupa, per volume, il penultimo luogo; il solo Mercurio è più piccolo di lui.
