C'est une croyance universelle, et pour ainsi dire une tradition native du genre humain, que l'homme, à l'aide de certaines formules et de certaines pratiques, empruntées tantôt à la religion, tantôt à la science, peut changer les lois éternelles de la nature, soumettre à sa volonté les êtres invisibles, s'élever au dessus de sa propre faiblesse, et acquérir la connaissance absolue et la puissance sans limites. Ces dons supérieurs auxquels il aspire, il les demande indistinctement aux éléments, aux nombres, aux astres, aux songes, au principe éternel du bien comme au génie du mal, aux anges, à Satan. Égaré par son orgueil, il crée toute une science en dehors de l'observation positive; et, pour régner en maître absolu sur la nature, il outrage à la fois la religion, la raison et les lois.
