Book cover

Love, Worship and Death Some Renderings from the Greek Anthology by Rennell Rodd is a beautifully crafted collection of translations from the Greek Anthology, offering readers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of ancient Greek literature. While it may not be the most widely known anthology, this book serves as a testament to the enduring power of these ancient texts.

Rodd's translations are a true delight for any lover of poetry. His skillful rendering of the original Greek poems captures the essence and spirit of their original version, while also making them accessible to modern readers. The language flows effortlessly, carrying both the meaning and the emotions of the poems, allowing us to deeply appreciate the beauty and artistry of the verses.

What sets this anthology apart is its exploration of timeless themes such as love, worship, and death. These motifs have always been central to the human experience, and Rodd's selection of poems connects us to the universal longings and desires that have persisted throughout the ages. It is remarkable how relevant and relatable these ancient verses remain, speaking to our deepest emotions and giving voice to our innermost thoughts.

Furthermore, Rodd's comprehensive introduction provides valuable context and background, which enhances our understanding and appreciation of the poems. His research on the origins, history, and significance of the Greek Anthology adds depth to the reading experience, enriching our encounter with these ancient works.

However, it is worth mentioning that this book may not be for everyone. Readers expecting a more extensive exploration of Greek literature may find the selection limited. Additionally, some may argue that a more critical analysis of the translations would have added further value to the anthology.

Nevertheless, Love, Worship and Death Some Renderings from the Greek Anthology is a remarkable testament to the enduring power of ancient Greek poetry. Rennell Rodd's translations are a true gift that enables us to connect with the thoughts and emotions of an ancient civilization, highlighting the timelessness and universality of human experience. This anthology is a must-read for anyone interested in delving into the treasures of Greek literature and understanding the profound beauty of these age-old verses.

For these reasons they still make so vivid an appeal to us after a long silence of many centuries. To myself who have lived for some years in that enchanted world of Greece, and have sailed from island to island of its haunted seas, the shores have seemed still quick with the voices of those gracious presences who gave exquisite form to their thoughts on life and death, their sense of awe and beauty and love...
