Vähäisellä mäen töyrällä kauniin metsäjärven rannalla oli Mäkelän varakas torppa; se oli rakennuksistaan uhkea, sillä siinähän kaksi tupaa vastakkaisin ja porstuan perässä kamari; ulkohuoneet olivat myöskin tarpeen mukaiset.

Etelä Suomen kunnaat ja kukkulat viheriöitsivät, ja jopa voikukatkin olivat puhjenneet kedon kaunistukseksi rannan äyräälle, johon Liisu, torpan vanhin tyttö, nyt levitteli pyykittyjä pellavalankojaan. Tuota punaposkista, lempeäsilmäistä tyttöä kaikki rakastivat varsinkin hänen hyvän luontonsa vuoksi. Liisun vanhemmat olivat varakkaita, vaikka heillä oli ollut kuusi lasta; niistä toki eli ainoastaan neljä, kaksi poikaa ja kaksi tytärtä. Mutta palatkaamme Liisuun, joka juuri on saanut lankavyhtinsä kedolle levitetyksi. Mitä ajattelee hän tuossa mielihyvällä katsellessaan rankoja, joita ahkeralla työllään on kokoon saanut? Mitä ajattelee tyttö, kuu hän valmistaa vaatetta, jota vasta omassa kodissaan on pitävä? Liisu nuot langat oli itseänsä varten kehrännyt, sillä olipa hän jo pari vuotta ollut kartanon Jaakon kihloissa. Tämä palveli nuorta kartanon omistajaa, patruuna Pohjosta. Patruunan lapsuudenaikona oli Jaakko kartanossa juoksupoikana; sittemmin kävi hän muuallakin onneansa koettamassa, mutta kun nuori patruuna vanhempainsa kuoltua tuli tilan omistajaksi, rupesi Jaakko taas kartanossa palvelemaan, ja täällä hän Mäkelän Liisun tuttavuuteen tuli, sillä tuo torppa oli kartanon aluetta...
