The book begins with Ma Pettengill, a widow in her sixties, inheriting a small farm in California's San Joaquin Valley. With her sharp wit and unconventional charm, Ma sets out to prove to her skeptical neighbors that she is more than capable of managing the farm effectively. Furthermore, Wilson's vivid descriptions of the beautiful California landscape make the setting feel like a character in itself. Whether it is the vast golden fields or the serene San Francisco Bay, the author's attention to detail transports the reader into the heart of early 20th-century California.

While the plot moves at a leisurely pace, it allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in Ma's world and appreciate her triumphs and struggles.
