Marie; a story of Russian love   By: (1799-1837)

Book cover

Marie; a story of Russian love by Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin is a beautifully written and captivating novel that delves into the complexities of love, passion, and societal expectations in 19th-century Russia.

Set against the backdrop of the aristocratic society, Pushkin weaves a tale of forbidden love that transcends social boundaries. The story follows the young and innocent Marie, who finds herself torn between the love of two men from different ends of the social spectrum. The first is Vladimir, a charming and wealthy nobleman who promises her a life of privilege, while the second is Alexei, a penniless artist who captures her heart with his passion and intellectual depth.

Pushkin's prose is exquisite, full of poetic descriptions that transport the reader to the lavish palaces, prestigious salons, and bustling streets of St. Petersburg. His ability to portray the beauty of the Russian landscape and the emotive power of nature adds depth and symbolism to the narrative.

What sets this novel apart is the exploration of societal norms and expectations within the context of love. Pushkin skillfully highlights the limitations placed on women during this time, portraying Marie as a victim of her circumstances. Her struggle to choose between her heart and societal obligations is a central theme of the story, and Pushkin forces the reader to question the price one must pay for love and personal fulfillment.

The characters in Marie; a story of Russian love are multi-dimensional and relatable, with each carrying their own flaws and virtues. Marie is portrayed as a sympathetic heroine whose naivety and desperation to break free from her societal chains make her a compelling protagonist. Vladimir and Alexei, the two suitors vying for her affection, represent the opposing forces of societal standing and true passion.

Overall, Marie; a story of Russian love is a timeless classic that combines the allure of romance with a thought-provoking exploration of societal constraints. Pushkin's skillful storytelling, vivid imagery, and profound insights into the human condition make this novel a must-read for both lovers of Russian literature and those interested in the universal themes of love, sacrifice, and societal expectations.

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE.

Alexander Pushkin, the most distinguished poet of Russia, was born at Saint Petersburg, 1799. When only twenty one years of age he entered the civil service in the department of foreign affairs. Lord Byron's writings and efforts for Greek independence exercised great influence over Pushkin, whose "Ode to Liberty" cost him his freedom. He was exiled to Bessarabia [A region of Moldova and western Ukraine] from 1820 to 1825, whence he returned at the accession of the new emperor, Nicholas, who made him historiographer of Peter the Great. Pushkin's friends now looked upon him as a traitor to the cause of liberty. It is not improbable that an enforced residence at the mouth of the Danube somewhat cooled his patriotic enthusiasm. Every Autumn, his favorite season for literary production, he usually passed at his country seat in the province Pekoff... Continue reading book >>
