Ik zal u eens iets vertellen, dat heel lang geleden in de Ukraine is voorgevallen, en wel in een vergeten, maar frisschen en bekoorlijken hoek van deze landstreek.

Ik houd veel van die streken, waarover men weinig spreekt, die de vreemdeling niet bezoekt, die men aan zich zelf overlaat, die haar schuilplaatsen en haar geheimen, haar groote smarten en haar eenvoudige genoegens voor zich houden. De geschiedenis van die streken is meestal niet bekend. Men ontmoet er, wat men nergens anders vindt: zaken en menschen zijn er nieuw. Die landen hebben, zonder het aan iemand te zeggen, soms ook hun helden, waarachtige helden.

Ik houd ook veel van helden, vooral als zij er zich niet op beroemen, dat zij 't zijn, als zij eerlijk en oprecht zijn, als zij groote dingen doen, zonder luidkeels te roepen: "Kijk eens aan! dat heb ik nu gedaan!
