Sydänyön aikana Syyskuun 19 p:nä 1888 menimme Döbeln laivalle, alottaaksemme pitkää matkaamme Etelä Amerikkaan ja Yhdysvaltoihin. Oli ihana kuutamo ilta. Helsinkimme näytti niin kauniilta, hiljaiselta ja rauhalliselta, levollisesti uinaillen täysikuun valossa. Tukholman ja Göteborgin kautta kävi matka. Viimeksi mainitussa paikassa menimme jotenkin vanhalle ja likaiselle Vilson höyrylaivalle "Malmö" ja jatkoimme sillä matkaamme ulos Pohjanmerelle. Kahden päivän matkustuksen perästä saimme näkyviin Flamborough Head'in, Hull'in pohjoispuolella, ja pari tuntia sen jälkeen olimme Humber joen suussa. Sitte purjehdittuamme vielä noin kolme tuntia pitkin rupaista Humber jokea, saavuimme Hull'in edustalle, laskimme ankkurin ja tulimme maalle. Seuraavana aamuna, Syyskuun 28 p:nä, jätimme savuisen Hullin ja saapua hujahdimme 4 1/2 tunnissa Lontoosen. Kiidimme hurmaavaa vauhtia.
