Päivä nousi, kullaten kukkulat ja harjut Tyyneveden luonnonihanassa pitäjässä. Oli yksi noita kauniita heinäkuun aamuja, jolloin oikea maamies ei malta tuvassa torkuskella. Hän kiiruhtaa tiluksilleen, katselee kasvujen kukoistusta ilomielin ja kiitoksella kaiken hyvän antajalle ja lähtee työhönsä, kiihotettuna uuteen ahkeruuteen.

Hovilan talossa kuitenkaan ei olla vielä liikkeellä. Kukko vaan kiekuu karjapihalla, mutta tässä talossa suinkaan ei ole "kukon virret viisarina".

Vasta kun aurinko on hyvän matkan ylennyt taivaanrannalta, astuu kaksi renkiä, piiput suussa ja suitset olkapäällä, huoneestansa. He katsahtavat ympärilleen, ojentelevat itsensä ja rykäsevät.
