Book cover

The New Gulliver and Other Stories by Barry Pain is a collection of short stories that can only be described as eccentric, imaginative, and thought-provoking. Pain introduces readers to a world where reality intertwines with the realm of the fantastical, challenging our preconceived notions and pushing the boundaries of our imagination.

One of the stand-out stories in this collection is "The New Gulliver," which serves as the book's centerpiece. It is a clever reimagining of Jonathan Swift's classic tale, Gulliver's Travels. Pain takes us on a surreal journey with the protagonist, who finds himself in a series of bizarre lands inhabited by strange creatures. What sets this story apart is its clever commentary on society's flaws and hypocrisies. Pain offers a poignant critique of colonialism, class divisions, and human foibles through his fantastical world-building.

The other stories in this collection are equally engrossing and capture Pain's ability to weave intricate narratives. Each story offers a unique perspective on life, highlighting different facets of the human experience. From exploring themes of love, loss, and redemption in "The October Revolutionist" to delving into the darker side of human nature in "The End of A Show," the diversity of topics keeps readers engaged throughout.

Pain's writing style is both vivid and intricate, allowing readers to become fully immersed in the world he creates. His ability to seamlessly blend humor, satire, and social commentary enriches the reading experience and adds depth to the stories. The author's attention to detail and adept storytelling create a sense of realism even within the most surreal landscapes.

While each story is highly imaginative and captivating, some of the narratives may require a bit of patience to fully appreciate. The intricacies and underlying messages may require multiple readings to fully grasp, but the effort is rewarding. Moreover, Pain's ability to challenge conventional thinking and provide social commentary is a testament to his mastery of the craft.

In conclusion, The New Gulliver and Other Stories is a remarkable collection that showcases Barry Pain's talent for crafting imaginative and thought-provoking narratives. With its blend of fantasy, social commentary, and clever storytelling, this collection offers a unique reading experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional fiction. Whether a fan of satirical literature or simply curious about exploring new literary territories, this book is sure to entertain, challenge, and ignite the imagination.

CHAPTER I

(The first few pages of the account of his travels by Mr Lemuel Gulliver, junior, have unfortunately been damaged by fire and are for the most part illegible. He appears to have escaped by swimming, and his record of the number of days he spent in the water and the distance covered verges upon the incredible. His statement that he lived principally upon the raw flesh of those sharks which made the mistake of attacking him will also be accepted with reserve by those who remember the latitude in which the Island of Thule is traditionally placed. The legible and consecutive manuscript begins with his arrival at the island.)

I now wrung the water from my clothes as well as I might, and spread them on the rocks in the sun. After an hour, perhaps, I was so far recovered from my exertions that I thought I might now see what manner of island this was to which my ill chance had brought me. Donning my clothes again I climbed up the low cliff... Continue reading book >>
