NÄYTELMÄ.

"Mutta, Michel , milloinka sinä viimeinkin suostut viettämään tyttäremme kihlajaisia? Kohta on koko vuosi kulunut siitä kuin paroni Alfons pyysi Beatricen kättä ja sai lupauksen häneltä sekä meiltä. Mutta miks'ei voi asiaa loppuun ajaa?" Näin puhui Rauhalinnan vanha kreivinna miehellensä. Rauhalinnan vanhalle kreiville, aina kun he illallisen syötyänsä olivat istahtuneet kamiinin eteen tai kesällä kuistille. Ja Rauhalinnan vanha kreivi napsautti nuuskarasiaansa ja vastasi:

"Kärsimystä, kärsimystä! Olenhan sanonut, että valmistan odottamatonta huvitusta, surpriisia!"

"Mutta olisihan jo parhainkin surpriisi ennättänyt tulla vuodessa valmiiksi. Ihmiset rupeavat jo puhelemaan yhtä ja toista, sillä kaikki tietävät kumminkin heidän antaneen lupaukset toisillensa."

"Kärsimystä! Puhukoot nyt mitä hyvänsä; toista he sitten sanovat, kun saavat osansa tuosta surpriisista." Ja hyvin salaperäisenä nuuskasi kreivi uudelleen ja lisäsi:

"Kärsimystä, kärsimystä vaan!... Mutta nyt on aika, mon ange , sinun mennä levolle, ja minua odottaa työ?"

"Mikä työ?"

Kreivi lähestyi rouvaansa, koetti tehdä kasvonsa veitikkamaisiksi, napsautti sormillaan ja sanoi:
