Noite quente d'abril. Um golpho oriental E o mar cantando aos pés tristezas sem egual.

Paz immensa, em que a noite etherea e constellada Scismava na mudez da sombra avelludada...

Na baça pallidez d'um terraço sumptuoso, Feito para um sultão se embriagar de gòso,

Da pallida Dinah, a pallida figura Sorvia, n'um anceio, errando pela altura,

Um desejo sem fórma, ethereo, fluctuante, Uma vaga chiméra, uma chiméra errante!

Sonho tão ideal, coisa tão indecisa Que lembrava o fugir incerto d'uma brisa.

Emquanto o vasto mar, rolando de mansinho, Dolente, meigo, azul cantava de baixinho

Balladas provençaes d'uma immensa ternura E Dinah, desejando, errava pela altura,

Passa uma náu antiga, uma náu de cruzados, Épicos, triumphaes nos elmos emplumados!

E o mais louro e gentil, o mais devaneador, Um principe lorêno, heroe e trovador,

Vendo subitamente o seu corpo d'ondina, Diz n'um deslumbramento: «Oh Deus! Como és divina!

«Dá me um cabello teu, um só, oh feiticeira! «Que eu dou te a minha gloria immensa e carniceira.

«Vem vêr como lampeja a minha bronzea lança «N'um campo de batalha, ao Sol d'uma esperança,

«E pede me, depois, tudo o que quizeres, «Da cabeça d'um rei, ao branco mal me queres!
