Book cover

"Old-Fashioned Ethics and Common-Sense Metaphysics With Some of Their Applications" by William Thomas Thornton is a compelling exploration of two interrelated philosophical topics. Written in a clear and engaging style, Thornton delves into the realms of ethics and metaphysics, showcasing the enduring value of these subjects in our modern world.

One of the highlights of the book is Thornton's adeptness in reintroducing old-fashioned ethics to contemporary readers. Drawing from classic philosophical traditions, he navigates complex ethical principles with ease, providing readers with a solid foundation to understanding moral reasoning. Thornton's emphasis on the practical applications of ethics helps bridge the gap between theory and everyday life, making this book particularly accessible for newcomers to the subject.

Additionally, Thornton seamlessly weaves together common-sense metaphysics into the narrative. Exploring topics such as causality, perception, and the nature of reality, he constructs a comprehensive framework grounded in logical reasoning. This approach offers readers a refreshing perspective on metaphysical questions, inviting them to ponder the deeper aspects of existence while showcasing the relevance of metaphysics in various practical contexts.

One of the strengths of this book lies in its balance between philosophical depth and readability. Thornton avoids excessive jargon, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with philosophical discourse can grasp the concepts presented. At the same time, he rigorously presents his arguments, drawing on a broad range of philosophical thinkers throughout history, to substantiate his claims. This approach allows readers to engage with the content while gaining a broader understanding of the rich historical tapestry of ethics and metaphysics.

Moreover, Thornton's inclusion of real-life examples and case studies further enhances the relevance of the topics discussed. By illustrating how ethical principles and metaphysical concepts manifest in concrete scenarios, he encourages readers to critically examine their own beliefs and apply these ideas to their own lives. This practical dimension adds depth to the book, transforming it into not just a theoretical exploration but a guide to ethical decision-making and self-reflection.

While "Old-Fashioned Ethics and Common-Sense Metaphysics With Some of Their Applications" commendably presents these subjects, it does require a certain level of focus and concentration from readers due to its detailed explanations and intricate arguments. Some may find certain sections overly analytical, potentially challenging their engagement with the material. However, for those willing to invest the necessary thought and time, the rewards are plentiful, as each chapter offers new insights and perspectives to ponder.

In conclusion, William Thomas Thornton's "Old-Fashioned Ethics and Common-Sense Metaphysics With Some of Their Applications" is a thought-provoking and beautifully-written exploration of two fundamental branches of philosophy. Navigating the realms of ethics and metaphysics with skill and clarity, Thornton emphasizes their practical applications, making this book a valuable resource for both novices and seasoned philosophers alike. With its engaging style and insightful content, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone interested in the intricacies of moral reasoning and the nature of existence.

I am even so far gone of late in this way of thinking, that I have quitted several of the sublime notions I had got in their schools for vulgar opinions. And I give it you on my word, that since this revolt from metaphysical notions to the plain dictates of nature and common sense, I find my understanding strangely enlightened, so that I can now easily comprehend a great many things which before were all mystery and riddle.' BERKELEY'S HYLAS AND PHILONOUS.

PREFACE.

The book was all but finished, and only the Preface remained, over which I was hesitating, apprehensive equally of putting into it too much and too little, when one of the most frequent 'companions of my solitude' came to my aid, shewing me, in fragments, a preface already nearly written, and needing only a little piecing to become forthwith presentable. Here it is.

Whereby it happens that for the artist who would fain minister medicinally to the relief of folly, 'the publishing of a Work of Art,' designed, like this, to redeem Truth from premature obsolescence, 'becomes almost a necessity...
