Erään ylimystalon konttorissa lähellä Lorensia Nyrnbergissä istuivat isä ja poika suuren kirjoituspöydän ääressä vastatusten, selvitellen mitä tarkimmasti jotakin suurenlaista kauppa asiaa. Kumpikin luki omalla paperillaan yhteen samoja pitkiä numerorivejä, katsoakseen paremman varmuuden tähden, saivatko sitte summat yhtä suuriksi. Hoikka, ihan isänsä näköinen nuorukainen kohotti ensiksi terävän nenänsä kauniisti piirretyistä numeroistaan. Hänen työnsä oli päättynyt ja hän nyt, vähä itsetunnon vivahdusta laihoissa, surumielisissä kasvoissaan, odotteli varovaisemman isänsä valmistumista.

Silloin astui sisään palvelija, kädessään suurimuotoinen, isolla sinetillä lukittu kirje. Eräs ruotsalaisen ratsuväen kornetti oli sen tuonut; hän oli mennyt raatihuoneen luo katselemaan maailmanmainioita kuvia ja luvannut palata juuri tunnin kuluttua.

Kauppias tunsi ensi katsahduksella Ruotsin kuninkaan Kustaa Aadolfin paksupiirteisen käsialan ja oudosteli hiukan semmoista kunniaa, että sai kuninkaalta omakätisen kirjeen. Olihan syytä peljätä, että kuningas, jota hän oli äsken rakennetussa Nyrnbergin kauneimmassa talossaan kestinnyt, tahtoisi saada rahalainaa isänmaalliselta vierasystävältään...
