Laura ei ollut nukeista välittänyt lainkaan. Mutta kerran ollessaan äitinsä kanssa kaupungilla kävelyllä hän yhtäkkiä pysähtyi myymälän ikkunan ääreen, jossa oli nukkeja, osotti niistä muuatta ja äitinsä hämmästykseksi sanoi:

»Osta, äiti, tuo minulle.»

Se oli kyllä sievä nukke, jonka saattoi asettaa istumaan tahi seisomaan, kädet erilaisissa asennoissa. Mutta äidin mielestä siellä oli paljon kauniimpia ja sellaisia, jotka puhuivatkin lausuen muutamia sanoja. Hän niitä tarjotteli, vaan Laura ei huolinut kuin siitä, jota oli osottanut.

Kun nukke tuotiin kotia, niin vanha Leena, kyökkipiika, joka sattui olemaan läsnä laatikkoa avattaessa, siunasi ja löi kahta kämmentä yhteen, sieppasi nuken ja juoksutti sen lehtorin kamariin:

»Lehtori, katsokaa! Rouvanne koulutyttönä, ihan ilmetty.»

Lehtori ei ollut nähnyt rouvaansa ennenkuin aikaisena neitinä, oli tutustunut häneen vasta jonkun aikaa ennen kihlaustaan. Vikkelästi hän otti silmälasinsa, jotka lukiessaan oli pannut pöydälle, ja alkoi hymysuin tarkastella nukkea. Mutta hän epäilevästi pudisti päätään. Ei hän keksinyt mitään yhdennäköisyyttä nukessa...
