Non già!.... Dalle tue laudi Fu consacrato il primo; Tu lo sapesti scegliere Dal medïocre limo; [4] All'altro degli stolidi Soltanto il volgo indegno Oggi contrasta il fervido Estro e il robusto ingegno.

Forse dell' Inno a Satana [5] Ti spaventò il concetto? No!.... Che tu abborri i vincoli Che strozzan l'intelletto, E so che, quando mediti, Ti ribelli ai confini, Al pensier del filosofo Imposti dai cretini.

È ver, talora il genio Ama le forme strane, Ma il pensator sa leggere Nelle sue cifre arcane, E sa discerner l'enfasi Del verso che non crea Dal balenar fantastico D'una sublime idea.
