Tohtorin talon ruokasalissa kävi lakkaamaton puheen porina. Nuorin lapsista leikki lattialla pienen, naapuritalosta vieraisille tulleen toverin kanssa, vanhemmat lukivat läksyjään, mikä ääneen, mikä puoliääneen.

Eero, vanhin kotona olevista lapsista, istui erillään muista huoneen perällä, suuressa, vanhanaikuisessa keinutuolissa, kirjat polvellaan. Ikkunan luona, pienen pöydän ympärillä lukivat kansakoulua käyvät lapset läksyjään. Heitä oli kaksi tyttöä ja kaksi poikaa. Ville, vanhin heistä, istui kahdeksanvuotiaan Yrjön vieressä ja joka kerralta, kun Yrjön sisälukuharjoitus kävi liian äänekkääksi tuuppasi Ville häntä saappaan korolla sääreen. »Älähän», äännähti silloin Yrjö ja siirtyi etäämmälle veljestä. Mutta tuuppaus teki tehtävänsä. Luku kävi isoksi aikaa hiljaisemmaksi, kunnes voima ja vauhti taas vähitellen kiihtyi, aiheuttaen lopulta uuden tuuppauksen.

Villen ja Yrjön välillä ijässä olevat pikku tytöt istuivat pöydän toisella puolella, milloin äänettöminä lukien, milloin hiljaa keskenään supisten.
