Apesar de existirem varias publicações que têem por objecto o estudo do povo português sob diversos aspectos, póde affirmar se resolutamente que a nossa ethnographia se acha na infancia, já porque muitos desses aspectos, entre os quaes alguns da maior importancia, têem sido apenas levemente tocados, já porque a muitas daquellas publicações falta a precisão scientifica. Carecemos nós, sobretudo, de um trabalho de conjuncto sufficientemente completo, impossivel de organisar pela ausencia de numerosos dados que a diligencia dum só investigador ou até dum pequeno grupo de investigadores associados não teria capacidade de reunir.

O estudo do povo português sob o aspecto physico está apenas iniciado: o que falta fazer, ainda dentro dos limites do estrictamente indispensavel, é quasi tudo!
