Tot dit gedicht van Shelley is de lezing van Aeschylus' "Prometheus Geboeid", waarvan het vervolg: "Prometheus Ontboeid" verloren is, de aanleiding geweest. Talrijke regels en brokstukken in het engelsche drama herinneren aan het grieksche, wat men reeds voldoende kan zien, al kent men, zoo als ik, hiervan alleen de vertaling van Elisabeth Browning. Wat meer is: de grootsche figuur van Prometheus is bij Aeschylus geen andere dan bij Shelley. Aeschylus zag in zijn daad ook het nuttelooze, hij liet het koor hem toeroepen: "O vriend, schouw en zie! wat is al de schoonheid van het menschdom? kan het schoon zijn? Wat is al zijn sterkte? is het sterk? En wat voor hoop kunnen zij dragen, deze stervende levenden; die éen dag leven? En ziet gij niet, mijn vriend, hoe zwak en traag, en als een droom, dit arme blinde menschdom gaat, afgedreven van zijn doel? En hoe geen menschetwisten kunnen verwarren de harmonie van Zeus?" maar toch rijst uit dit drama, dat door dit besef van het wanhopige van Prometheus' streven wezenlijk een drama is, bewonderenswaardig reusachtig de gestalte van hem, die de menschen zoo liefhad, dat hij om hen den toorn van Zeus trotseerde...
