Promise of American Life

Book cover
By: (1869-1930)

In "Promise of American Life," Herbert Croly presents a compelling argument for a new direction in American politics. He advocates for a progressive government that works to promote the common good and social welfare, arguing that the American dream can only be realized through strong government intervention. Croly's vision is both idealistic and pragmatic, as he acknowledges the challenges of implementing such policies but remains hopeful for a better future for all Americans. While some may find his ideas controversial or radical, there is no denying the passion and intelligence behind his arguments. "Promise of American Life" is a thought-provoking read that challenges readers to consider the role of government in promoting equality and justice in society.

Book Description:
The book is said to "offer a manifesto of Progressive beliefs" that "anticipated the transition from competitive to corporate capitalism and from limited government to the welfare state." By Croly’s death in 1930, only 7,500 copies of The Promise of American Life had been sold. Despite this, the book was immensely influential, even influencing Theodore Roosevelt to adopt the platform of The New Nationalism.
