Book cover
By: (1872-1939)

Rainbow Trail by Zane Grey is a gripping Western novel that follows the story of John Shefford, a simple man from Illinois who travels to the rugged country of southern Utah in search of the woman he loves. Along the way, Shefford encounters a diverse cast of characters, including the mysterious and enigmatic Venters, who becomes his guide and companion on his journey.

The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of the stunning landscape of the West, from towering cliffs and deep canyons to rolling plains and rushing rivers. Grey's prose brings the setting to life, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the harsh beauty of the wilderness.

As Shefford delves deeper into the mysteries of the wilderness, he uncovers secrets and betrayals that threaten to tear apart the community of Mormon settlers who have made their home in the rainbow-colored cliffs of the Rainbow Bridge. Grey does an excellent job of weaving together personal drama, adventure, and romance in a seamless narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.

Overall, Rainbow Trail is a thrilling ride through the untamed wilds of the American West, filled with action, romance, and suspense. Zane Grey's masterful storytelling and vivid imagery make this novel a must-read for fans of Western fiction and adventure stories.

Book Description:
The Rainbow Trail is a sequel to The Riders of the Purple Sage. Both novels are notable for their protagonists' mild opposition to Mormon polygamy, but in The Rainbow Trail this theme is treated more explicitly. The plots of both books revolve around the victimization of women in the Mormon culture: events in Riders of the Purple Sage are centered on the struggle of a Mormon woman who sacrifices her wealth and social status to avoid becoming a junior wife of the head of a local church, while The Rainbow Trail contrasts the older Mormons with the rising generation of Mormon women who will not tolerate polygamy and Mormon men who do not seek it.
