Book cover

In "The Religious Spirit of the Slavs," Nikolaj Velimirović delivers a thought-provoking collection of sermons that revolve around the theme of war. Published in 1916 during a tumultuous time in history, this book shines a light on the deep-rooted faith and resilience exhibited by the Slavic people.

Velimirović, an eminent Serbian Orthodox bishop and theologian, displays his profound understanding of history, theology, and the human condition in these sermons. Through his eloquent language and captivating storytelling, he conveys a powerful message of faith, hope, and love amid the chaos of war.

One of the book's greatest strengths is Velimirović's ability to connect historical events with timeless spiritual teachings. He draws on the rich tradition of Slavic spirituality, blending it with biblical wisdom, to provide a unique perspective on war and its impacts on individuals and communities. This approach allows readers to see beyond the immediate horrors of conflict and reflect on the potential for spiritual growth amidst adversity.

Velimirović's sermons also serve as a reminder of the unity that can emerge from shared suffering and the importance of embracing compassion and forgiveness. He emphasizes the need for individuals to look beyond their own interests and extend a helping hand to others, regardless of their nationality or background. In doing so, Velimirović urges readers to foster a sense of unity and solidarity during times of crisis, ultimately contributing to a more peaceful and just world.

However, one potential drawback of this book is its heavy reliance on theological concepts and references. While Velimirović's depth of knowledge is undoubtedly impressive, some readers may find themselves overwhelmed by the numerous biblical allusions and theological nuances. Nevertheless, those with a keen interest in theology and spirituality will undoubtedly appreciate the intellectual depth and richness embedded within these sermons.

In conclusion, "The Religious Spirit of the Slavs" is a remarkable collection of sermons that delves into the depths of human spirituality amidst the ravages of war. Velimirović's ability to blend history, theology, and personal anecdotes creates a compelling and inspiring work. While it may be challenging for readers unfamiliar with theological concepts, those with an open mind and a desire to explore the intersection of faith and war will find this book profoundly enlightening.

The Holy Synod and Tolstoi.

When Count Tolstoi was excommunicated by the Holy Synod of Russia because "he preached the teachings which are contrary to the Christian faith," the world was divided in opinion and sympathy into two parts. The partisans of Tolstoi were in the majority in the Western world; those of the Holy Synod in Russia and the Orthodox East. Yet Holy Russia rejected Tolstoi with much more compassion than Western Europe approved of him. It was a human tragedy which is not often repeated in history and was understood only by Russia. The conflict was more stern than appeared on the surface. The problems in question meant not less than the dilemma: either the Christian world was to continue or it must return to the starting point of human history and begin all anew. A little blade of grass in the field said to its green neighbours: "Why do we grow up? It is nonsense and pain... Continue reading book >>
